Years after the singer's death, his dilapidated Highgate mansion is being restored to its former glory.
The North London enclave of Highgate village, renowned for its gleaming Porsches and Aston Martins lining its immaculate streets, is one of Britain's most exclusive neighbourhoods. However, amidst the stunning properties served by nearby artisanal bakeries and organic food stores, one stands out: George Michael's much-loved former home. Since the singer's sudden death in 2016, the Grade II-listed mansion, purchased by George in 1987 as his solo career took off, has fallen into disrepair.
Its enormous trees and bushes are now overgrown and unkempt. The property, clad in scaffolding, with overflowing skips littering the driveway, is undergoing extensive renovation.Local residents have expressed their surprise at the delay in addressing the property's condition. 'We used to see George around,' one resident commented, 'but no one seems to have been in the house for years. With all that money sloshing about, it’s strange that it’s taken so long to get around to sorting it out.' Following George Michael's death, the legal complexities of his estate were settled. The bulk of his fortune went to his sisters, Yioda and Melanie Panayiotou, while his father, Kyriacos (known as Jack), was granted the use of the singer's horse stud farm in Hertfordshire. George Michael's remaining assets were to be sold and divided between his father, sisters, and friends.Now, with the legal battles over the star's estate settled, workers are finally able to focus on restoring his former home. The extensive renovation includes removing a water tank, installing a new roof with solar panels, replacing the decayed exterior cladding, and converting two garages into living quarters. Landscape designers also seek permission to fell or heavily prune several trees which have become a threat to the property. When complete, the property is expected to be worth well over £10 million, and Yioda, who has been managing her brother's estate since his death, is expected to move back in.
