Leeds United have fended off an offer of £30m from Brighton for Georginio Rutter
Having already said goodbye to Archie Gray this week, it's fair to say the loss of Georginio Rutter hot on the heels of the beloved homegrown star would have been a bitter pill to swallow for supporters. The message sent would not have been favourable and the owners would have found themselves under even more pressure.
Should Leeds do all they can to keep hold of Rutter and would an improved offer be enough to tempt them and to let the player go? We asked our writers for their opinion. If Leeds are serious about mounting another promotion tilt, letting Rutter go would send out completely the wrong message. His best years are in front of him and it would be a bitter pill to swallow for the fans following Archie Gray's departure. Rutter is a big crowd favourite and United should be looking to build the team around him next year.
Yes, Rutter can frustrate, but the fact remains that he was directly involved in 25 goals last season and it would be a surprise if the Frenchman did not improve on that figure if he stays put. After all, it is easy to forget that this will be just Rutter's second full season in English football and he is still only 22. That Brighton are interested says it all given how smart the Seagulls are at recruitment.
The £30m off for Rutter maybe less than Leeds paid for him, but would have represented a profit on the books through the amortisation process of calculating profit and loss. Leeds could have taken that boost for Profit and Sustainability but by knocking back the offer, they’ve told us two things. Crysencio Summerville may well yet depart, but you can be sure Leeds will hold out for the maximum fee they can get for the Dutchman, and talk of the transfer battle between Liverpool, PSG and Chelsea can only help drive up the price. Daniel Farke must be given the right tools to help steer the club back to the top flight, and this stance from the Leeds hierarchy bodes well.
