The Hitler diaries that he claimed to have unearthed were crude forgeries

In 1968 the Thomson Organization, then owner of The Sunday Times of London, bought a set of diaries supposedly written by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. To the credit of editor Harry Evans, the newspaper did not fall for the fraud and indeed published an exposé of it. If only The Sunday Times had checked the so-called Hitler diaries, offered for sale in dubious circumstances in 1983, with equal rigour.

In the 1970s, he mortgaged his apartment to buy a yacht that had belonged to Hermann Göring, a Nazi chieftain. Then he began a relationship with Göring’s daughter, Edda. This drew him into contact with networks of ex-Nazis and ultimately with Kujau, who began forging the diaries in the late 1970s and met Heidemann in 1981.
