With white-sand beaches, island resorts, sparkling lakes and fairy-tale castles, this country has it all - except hordes of British tourists
are famously keen travellers, which means that wherever we go, they are usually already there. And they are equally keen on their own country, it seems, outspending any other European nation onSo why do so few Britons visit Germany outside major sporting events and business trips? You can’t help but feel healthy here. Places such as Oberstaufen and Bad Hindelang make a speciality out of detox cures: hay baths, beer baths, mud baths and something called Schroth, which involves being wrapped tightly like a mummy, and apparently helps with high cholesterol and blood pressure (Dresden is Germany’s Prague, full of palaces and statues, with musicians on street corners and paddlesteamers on the river Elbe in the heart of town.in winter.
The main resort here is Bad Schandau, on the river’s edge, with hotels such as the Elbhotel (doubles from €120/£102,But the biggest single attraction is the Bastei, a soaring cliff face which rises a giddy 192m from the riverbanks. It offers stupendous views upriver and down from its dramatically-protruding Skywalk, as well as south across the mountains into Czechia.
