For the time being, the AfD are not going to achieve either state or federal power

The far-right AfD topped the poll in Thuringia with 32.8 per cent of the vote, while in neighbouring Saxony it came a close second to the conservative CDU with 30.6 per cent against 31.9 per cent. These successes are likely to be replicated when Brandenburg votes in three weeks’ time. All three states are in what used to be the Communist-runNationally, the AfD is not in the same dominant position.

The fact that two populist parties took about 45 per cent of the total vote in these eastern states suggests that all is not well with political culture in the five former DDr Länder. The answers probably do not lie in economic data, even though there is still an 11 per cent income lag between east and west, as well as a wealth gap in terms of property values and the like.
