The $2.9 billion deal with Germany is the single-largest defense export agreement in the history of Australia.

The German Parliament has approved the purchase of 123 Heavy Weapon Carrier vehicles, which will be built at Queensland by Rheinmetall, marking the biggest defense export sale for Australia.The Heavy Weapon Carrier for the Infantry serves as a replacement for the Wiesel tracked vehicle for direct tactical fire support of infantry units.

The vehicle is based on the Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle , the wheeled armored reconnaissance vehicle of the Australian Defense Force, which is also supplied by Rheinmetall. This is an 8×8 combat vehicle with an armored reconnaissance mission module, including the two-person Lance turret., the main weapon in the vehicle is the Rheinmetall MK30-2 ABM automatic cannon.

Rheinmetall AG is a German automotive and arms manufacturer, headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany. It operates in various locations in Australia with headquarters in Redbank, Queensland, and is one of the largest suppliers of military vehicles to the Australian Defense Force.This is the single-largest defense export agreement in Australia’s history. To put things into perspective, its entire defense exports in 2020-21 was $2.6 billion, according to Australia’s Defense Export Office.

Albanese said, “This significant announcement is worth over $1 billion to the Australian economy in the production and supply of these vehicles. The agreement will boost Australia’s sovereign defense industry, secure local jobs and contribute to Australia’s economic growth.”
