Is it “cherry”, “zerry” or “exerry”? North Melbourne’s Tristan Xerri, his mum and other AFL players explain how to pronounce their names.

He’s in his seventh year as an AFL player, but Tristan Xerri reckons just one or two broadcasters pronounce his surname correctly. “The vast majority don’t.”

It’s more than just being nice for someone to say it the right way, she says. “If they’re not pronouncing Tristan’s name correctly, it feels like they’re not talking about him.” ”My last name’s Macedonian and my first name is German. I understand that it’s a tricky name to pronounce, so I’m not too concerned with it. But if you can pronounce it correctly, it means a lot.”

St Kilda key defender Arie Schoenmaker says his surname is often pronounced shoe-maker and scone-marker. He says the latter pronunciation is more South African.But his family, who have Dutch heritage, say it SHOOen-mayker. And his first name is Ah-ree. The key to getting the surname right is remembering to include the “n”, he says.
