Giant Japanese ‘space elevator’ promises to lift tourists 22,000 miles above Earth by 2050 – but there’s a big danger
The space elevator would bridge the gap between Earth and space via a hefty cable, said its designer, Japan-based Obayashi Corporation"Instead of taking six to eight months to reach Mars, scientists have estimated a space elevator could get us there in three to four months or even as quickly as 40 days," reported
"The concept has been deemed feasible from a construction standpoint, and it is now in the process of actually being developed."However, in an update on the project, Business Insider said yesterday the firm confirmed it was pushing ahead with its plans.Obayashi is currently "engaged in research and development, rough design, partnership building, and promotion," said its tech expert, Yoji Ishikawa.
"The port will eventually serve as a point of arrival and departure to transport us into space and back.Obayashi said that a colossal space solar power system could be installed near a geostationary orbit station to transmit large volumes of electrical energy back to Earth. "As a step toward the actualization of this concept, Obayashi is currently carrying out experimentation in space to test the long cable which will connect Earth and beyond.""It is composed of a 96,000 km carbon nanotube cable, a 400 m diameter floating Earth port and a 12,500-ton counter-weight," it added.
