From the observatory he built in his backyard, Rod Stubbings is one of only three people worldwide who have made 400,000 measurements of the brightness of variable stars.

Rod Stubbings is so fascinated by astronomy that he built an observatory in his backyard at the base of Victoria's Strzelecki Ranges.

Mr Stubbings is one of three people worldwide who have made 400,000 measurements of the brightness of variable stars. It awarded Mr Stubbings the 2024 Berenice and Arthur Page Medal for scientific contributions by an amateur astronomer. "There is so much out there to see, and we just don't have enough telescopes to be observing the sky all the time," she said.

"I thought, 'Gee, that observation has turned a satellite on that star just from me and no-one knows about it'."Mr Stubbings said he assessed the brightness of stars from memory, looking through his telescope without taking photographs or using gadgets. "All our data gets collected digitally and then gets fed straight to our computers where we then work and analyse what the telescopes have seen," she said.
