The man convicted of kidnapping Colleen Stan and keeping her as a sex slave is seeking to be released to a halfway house.
The 70-year-old man convicted in the infamous “Girl in the Box” case is seeking to be released to a halfway house. If a jury accepts the prosecutors’ contention he is a sexually violent predator, he would instead be committed to a state hospital.
On May 19, 1977, Hooker and his wife, Janice, kidnapped 20-year-old hitchhiker Colleen Stan. They kept her for seven years as a sex slave in their Red Bluff home; during much of that time, she said, she was confined to a wooden box. In imposing the maximum sentence, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Clarence Knight called Hooker “the most dangerous psychopath I have ever encountered.”
