My mum’s background is a whole different story. Her mother was from Edinburgh and middle class – she was a liberal who had gone from art school to study socialism and communism., he was a bohemian creative at heart. My grandfather was president of the Bank of Scotland and became the Governor of Northern Ireland, but dad had always been on the lookout for something new.
There was a time when my mother didn’t have the money for us to get the bus to school and so walked us for miles. She bought my sister and I a huge cookie for breakfast as it was all she could afford. She was mortified, but I remember being so happy we got to spend time with her before school in the park and that I got to have a giant cornflake cookie for breakfast.
The more I learnt, the more I dissociated from my family background. I couldn’t grasp the idea that some people were born into this kind of wealth and lived within a totally different system to everyone else. But also “high society'” held no interest to me. I found it boring. I didn’t get a proper education. I worked so hard in kitchens at 20 and trained to be a chef at 21. I had to have a strong work ethic, because I moved out of home at 18 and was completely self-sufficient.
