You might have to wait a bit longer for Sir Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel - it's been delayed while new Oscar nominee Paul Mescal heads back to the West End.
’s Almeida Theatre, the Rebecca Frecknall-directed production is now heading to the Phoenix Theatre in the West End for a March 20 to April 29 run.
While specific details about the sequel remain under wraps, insiders say it’s been confirmed that Paul will take on the role of Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen’s character Lucilla and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus from the first film.this week that 26-year-old Paul’s extended run on Streetcar means Gladiator 2 production has been delayed by ‘roughly two weeks’.Sir Ridley’s original film, released in 2000, won numerous awards , so it’s no surprise the play’s run is being extended.
The 58-year actor said: ‘Yeah we’ve had dinner and talked about it and all that stuff. So I know roughly how he’s shaping the story.’podcast: ‘But yeah, if you remember, there was a young kid who wanted to beat the Gladiator, which leads to the “My name is” speech.
Meanwhile, Paul will be joined by his original Streetcar castmates when the play, written by Tennessee Williams and first performed in 1947, moves to London’s West End, with Patsy Ferran, Anjana Casan and Dwane Walcott all being onboard for the renewed run.
