John Anderson, who was best known for his role as the umpire in the original ITV show, Gladiators, has died at the age of 92, the TV show said in a statement
John Anderson, the iconic Gladiators referee, has passed away at the age of 92, the television programme confirmed. The revered Scottish sports coach gained fame as the authoritative umpire on the original ITV series from 1992 to 2000 and later on Sky's short-lived revival.
The statement continued, expressing condolences: "Our hearts go out to his friends and family. John will forever be remembered as the iconic voice that brought us 'Gladiators Ready! Contenders Ready! '." Mark Clattenburg, who took on the role of referee in the BBC's recent iteration of Gladiators earlier this year, commented on Anderson's memorable presence: "One of the most iconic voices and will always be remembered.", reports Wales Online.
His tutelage reached athletes such as Staffordshire-born race walker Lisa Kehler, Scottish Olympic runner Liz McColgan, and hurdler William Sharman. Jennifer Stoute, an Olympic sprinter better known as Rebel on Gladiators, reminisced: "He was the best. He knew how to make us laugh and get mad toooo. Best memories."
