Frank McAvennie was rushed to hospital after the terrifying ordeal which saw the other car speed into his VW Touareg in the Borders. His car was written off following the horror crash.
An ex-Celtic and Scotland football team legend says he is "lucky to be alive" after a sleeping driver smashed into his car in a horror crash.
He said: “It was a bad car crash... It was terrifying actually. I was horrified. That could have been the end of me.” He added: “I really feel quite lucky to be alive. Reliving the ordeal, Frank said: “One moment I’m driving along looking forward to playing with big John and the next thing this other car is coming towards me. It was really quite frightening.”
Explaining what happened, Frank said: “It was a quarter to eight in the morning. The guy actually fell asleep. He came driving across and luckily with my reflexes I swerved. McAvennie told of his ordeal on the latest episode of the popular podcast Let Me Be Frank with co-host Simon Houston and their guest, former Scotland goalie Alan Rough. He joked that the crash was the scariest moment of his life alongside “a couple of divorces”.
McAvennie played for St Mirren, West Ham, and Celtic in a stellar career. He was capped five times for Scotland in the 1980s, scoring one goal. In 1982, he was named Scottish PFA Young Footballer of the Year and went with the Scotland squad to the World Cup in 1986.
