Images show the usually busy shopping street empty with police tape closing off the area. Several shops have also been forced to shut.
Argyle Street was taped off by police shortly after 10.30am today after an unknown package was discovered, with people told to avoid the area.
"As a precaution, a cordon is in place and a number of premises are being evacuated. They added: "Please avoid the area. There is no risk to the wider public."
