Humza Yousaf announced his plan at the SNP conference yesterday but there has been backlash from city councillors and local authority body COSLA.
Glasgow councillors have criticised Humza Yousaf’s “disrespectful” decision to announce a council tax freeze without consultation, adding it should be set locally.
Cllr Jon Molyneux, co-leader of the city’s Green group, said: “Council tax is a local tax and should be set by democratically elected councillors. If the freeze goes ahead, Cllr Molyneux said it is “vital that it is fully funded, that councils get a fair deal and that we finally get on with replacing the outdated and regressive council tax”.
A Glasgow SNP spokesman said the group “will always look to protect and improve services” and “ensure a fair settlement” for the people of the city. “We deplore the way the announcement was made and its substance, both of which fly in the face of the Verity House agreement which we all recently signed,” they added.
He said the plan would “bring much needed financial relief to those households who are struggling in the face of rising prices”.
