Dr Jennifer Travers and Mr Calan Mathieson are taking on a 500km cycle from London to Paris to raise money and awareness for Myeloma UK who help patients with an incurable blood cancer.
A Glasgow doctor set off on a cycle from London to Paris, alongside her surgeon husband, yesterday, September 7, after she was inspired by one of her patients.
Despite being the third most common type of blood cancer, it is especially difficult to detect as symptoms, including back pain, easily broken bones, fatigue and recurring infection, are often linked to general ageing or minor condition.Jennifer is a consultant haematologist at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and specialises in the treatment of myeloma, which kills 3,000 people in the UK each year.
Jennifer, 47, said: “One of my patients had completed it last year. Seeing him achieve something like this after being through so much, really inspired me. He kept saying to me afterwards, ‘You should do it’. His enthusiasm in the lead-up to it and afterwards and his pictures motivated me to do it.” The pair, who have three children, have raised close to £1,800 so far. They are hoping to collect even more which can be put towards vital research into new ground-breaking treatments and support for patients and their families.
Jennifer is especially keen to raise awareness of the tell-tale signs of myeloma to ensure patients get a timely diagnosis and the best possible chance to live well with the cancer for as long as possible.
