Glasgow City Council is now on course to issue £4 million worth of fines within its first 12 months despite complaints from motorists and an unsuccessful legal appeal from a local business.

Fines issued to drivers for breaching Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone have now broken the £3 million mark, according to figures published today .

Figures released showed a total of 3,001 Glasgow offences by older vehicles in February, which carry the potential for £331,740 being raised during the month unless they are paid within 14 days. Fines for drivers of cars and light goods vehicles are capped at £480 at the fifth offence but those driving minibuses, buses, coaches and HGVs are fined £960 for the fifth offence.

Patons Accident Repair Centre argued that improvements in air quality removed the need for the scheme.
