After a harrowing 153-day stay in Glasgow Children's Hospital, baby Hope Fry, born prematurely weighing less than a bag of sugar, is finally home with her parents, Katie and John. The little girl's journey was filled with challenges, including a brain bleed, perforated bowel, and ongoing health issues. But Hope's fighting spirit and the dedicated care of the medical staff allowed her to thrive and overcome these obstacles.

A Glasgow mother has shared her overwhelming joy after bringing her six-month-old daughter home for the first time. Hope Fry was born prematurely on July 30th, weighing a mere 461 grams, equivalent to less than a bag of sugar. She arrived at just 23 weeks gestation alongside her twin sister, Faith, who sadly passed away. This joyous homecoming marks the end of a 153-day stay at Glasgow Children's Hospital for Hope. Katie, Hope's 27-year-old mother, described the traumatic birth as a blur.

'Everything happened so quickly and it was such a shock,' she said. 'You never expect to have to give birth at 23 weeks.'Initially, Hope seemed to be doing well. She received nourishment through a tube while in an incubator. However, when she was just five days old, her condition took a turn for the worse. Her heart rate plummeted, requiring immediate resuscitation. It was later discovered that she had suffered a brain bleed and a perforated bowel, necessitating emergency surgery. Katie recounted the challenging journey, stating, 'It was touch and go at some points.' Despite these setbacks, Hope recovered from the surgery but continued to face ongoing health issues, including low oxygen levels, difficulty gaining weight, and the need for further surgery.Katie described the entire experience as a 'rollercoaster ride,' but she expressed immense gratitude for the dedicated medical staff at the Glasgow children's hospital. 'The medical staff saved our baby girl time and time again,' she said. 'The staff were amazing, you couldn't get better people. The doctors and nurses were so attentive and made sure we were eating and sleeping. They encouraged us to get out of the hospital for a while too, as it is such a daunting place, especially when your baby is so sick.' Though they had hoped to be home for Christmas, Hope wasn't quite ready. Katie shared, 'The staff allowed us to stay overnight on Christmas Eve. Santa visited the wards, and we all woke up together on the 25th. It was really lovely.' Finally, on December 30th, they received the much-awaited all-clear to go home. Looking forward to the new year, the new parents are filled with anticipation as they watch their baby girl grow. They praise Hope's resilience for helping them through the difficult times. Katie stated, 'Hope got us through the heartbreak of losing Fait and we wouldn't have survived it if it wasn't for her. We will deal with her sister's loss every day and I don't think we'll ever fully get over it. But we're taking every day as it comes and you start to learn to live with the circumstances. 'I just hope lives a good life and she's happy. I know she'll probably always have some problems, but I just strive for her to be happy.'Senior Staff Nurse at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) expressed their delight at seeing Hope finally reunited with her family. 'We are all absolutely delighted to see Hope finally getting home with her family. Looking after Hope and her family was a privilege, and we will miss seeing little Hope's smiley face on our neonatal unit,' they said. 'As a team we are all dedicated to ensuring that parents are cared for as much as our babies.' They added, 'Hope is settling in well at home and Katie and John have promised to keep in touch and we are all looking forward to seeing her progress. 'NICU is a place where miracles really do happen!
