This week saw the Michelin Guide Ceremony for Great Britain and Ireland take place in Glasgow for the first time, marking a significant moment for the city's culinary scene. While no new Michelin Stars were awarded to Glasgow restaurants, two existing establishments retained their prestigious accolades: Cail Bruich under chef Lorna McNee and Unalome led by Graeme Cheevers.
The event, held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, drew the crème de la crème of the UK's food industry, celebrating the city's burgeoning gastronomic landscape. The ceremony also recognized two new Glasgow restaurants with Bib Gourmand awards: Margo and Gaga. Named after Bibendum, the Michelin Man, this award highlights restaurants that offer exceptional quality cooking at a reasonable price. Margo, a recent addition to Miller Street, has garnered significant attention since its opening, impressing both diners and Michelin inspectors with its menu of snacks, small plates, and sharing dishes featuring seasonal produce. The restaurant, part of the Scoop group behind Ka Pao and Ox and Finch, joins its sister establishments in receiving the Bib Gourmand accolade. Margo, led by chef and Glasgow native Robin Aitken, is praised for its vibrant atmosphere and flavor-packed, generously priced dishes. The other Bib Gourmand recipient, Gaga on Partick's Dumbarton Road, is helmed by TV chef and restauranteur Julie Lin. Lin previously owned the beloved Kopitiam in the southside. Gaga, a Malaysian eatery, has been lauded by Michelin inspectors for its 'fresh-tasting, intensely flavoured dishes'. The presence of these new Bib Gourmand winners, alongside Glasgow's recent elevation to a city with two Michelin-starred restaurants for the first time in over a decade, underscores the city's growing prominence in the UK's culinary landscape. A total of 22 new Michelin stars were awarded this year, with two going to restaurants in Scotland, both located in Edinburgh.
