'I can assure members that we as a council stand ready'
Glasgow’s offer of aid to help Pakistan's monsoon flood victims has not been taken up, an SNP councillor has confirmed.
Villages were washed away and 1.7 million homes destroyed as well as 900 health facilities, 3.6 million acres of crops and 900,000 livestock. At least 1300 people died as a result, with 33 million left needing urgent assistance. Others have suffered from various waterborne diseases as a result of the rain.
On Thursday, Labour councillor Cecilia O’Lone asked if there had been any further updates regarding the motion. Councillor Greg Hepburn confirmed that elected members had been updated on all the actions taken by the local authority. “Those updates covered actions taken by officers and yourself Lord Provost to promote the disaster committee’s financial appeal to raise awareness of the issue among our citizens, attempts to reach out in solidarity to our twinning partners in Lahore and engagement with the Pakistan consular representatives in the UK Government.
