A statement on Instagram said: 'We’re sorry to announce that Winterfest at George Square will not be opening today due to adverse weather conditions.

'We’re hopeful that we’ll be able to open tomorrow and can’t wait to welcome everyone back to enjoy the festivities. Stay safe, and we’ll keep you updated here with the latest news. 'Thank you for your patience and support.' It comes as Storm Bert causes havoc across the UK, with trains to and from from Glasgow facing disruption. A yellow weather warnings for wind, snow, ice and rain is in force for areas surrounding Glasgow until Sunday. Elsewhere, South Lanarkshire Council confirmed Christmas lights switch on events in Rutherglen and Cambuslang have also been cancelled due to the bad weather. A spokesperson said: 'The weekend Christmas light switch on events in Rutherglen and Cambuslang have been cancelled because of adverse weather warnings. 'This is to help protect the safety of those setting up, and travelling to, the events.'
