Green Dennistoun councillor, Anthony Carroll, said he was 'disappointed' by the 'surprise' plans as they don't include a way to make Alexandra Parade a more accessible station for the city's east end.
A Glasgow councillor has expressed disappointment and frustration over Network Rail 's upgrade plans at a well-used east end station.
Network Rail announced that £1.75 million is to be spend on upgrading the Dennistoun station. This will include installing new lighting, CCTV cameras and the demolishing and rebuilding of Platform 1. The westbound platform will be out of use for five months during the works. "We only have partial access on a very few stations around here. This station is used by around 330,000 people a year. It's well used, every station in the north east has similar figures.
Councillor Carrol also expressed fears that the overnight works will disturb residents on Birkenhaw Street, where access for the works will be.Speaking on a Facebook community page, Robert Scott said: "It does seem a bit of a wasted opportunity if they are going to be working on the station generally. Not clear even what’s wrong with the westbound platform that it needs to be replaced."
Network Rail said that it takes a number of factors into consideration when enhancing its infrastructure including accessibility at nearby stations, demographic information, connectivity with other transport models and land ownership constraints.A spokesperson said: "The upcoming work at Alexandra Parade, on the Springburn branch of the North Clyde Line, includes the demolition and rebuild of platform 1.
