Glasgow Subway has incurred a significant expense to address passenger complaints regarding the instability and noise levels of its new train fleet.

Glasgow Subway has spent nearly £120,000 to install dampers on its new fleet of trains after passengers complained about feeling 'thrown about' during journeys. The Strathclyde Partnership for Travel (SPT), the operators of the subway, added more than 100 dampers to the new trains, which gradually replaced the older carriages last year. Passengers had reported that the new trains were too unstable and noisy.

The issue first came to light after a Freedom of Information request was made to The Scotsman newspaper. While SPT states that the new trains met all applicable safety standards, the dampers were installed to enhance the overall passenger experience. The dampers help to reduce vibrations and noise, and ultimately provide a more comfortable ride. A spokesperson for SPT explained, 'Following feedback from some passengers, SPT paid for the retrofitting of dampers to be added to the new train fleet to improve the ride quality of the trains in the system. While what the train manufacturer delivered met the applicable standards set for trains, we requested the additional dampers be added to further improve the ride.' The 17 new trains were introduced as part of a £288 million upgrade programme for the city's underground rail system, with the older trains being phased out gradually.
