Drivers in Glasgow will face a £100 fine if they park on pavements on most streets in the city starting from Wednesday, January 29th. The new regulations aim to safeguard pedestrians, particularly individuals using wheelchairs and those pushing strollers, who might be compelled to walk onto the road due to inconsiderate parking. Initially, warning notices will be distributed to drivers as they adapt to the changes.
All parking fines in Glasgow amount to £100, with a reduced penalty of £50 if paid within 14 days.Edinburgh took the lead as the first city in Scotland to implement a ban on pavement parking in January 2024, while London has had a similar ban in effect since 1974. Ministerial approval for the legislation was granted in December 2023, empowering all local councils to enforce the ban. Exemptions will not be granted on streets where parking restrictions are already enforced or where the roadway is at least 7.5 meters (24.6 feet) wide, ensuring safe passage for fire engines when vehicles are parked on both sides.The remaining streets will undergo an assessment to determine if alternative parking measures are suitable before considering any exemptions. Existing legislation on pavement parking includes exceptions for emergency service vehicles, waste collection vehicles, postal deliveries, the provision of urgent medical assistance, aiding accidents or breakdowns, and delivering or collecting goods for up to 20 minutes. Councillor Angus Millar, the city's transport convener, stated: 'Pavement parking, double parking, and parking at dropped kerbs pose road safety hazards across Glasgow and endanger vulnerable pedestrians and wheelchair users daily. Forcing individuals to walk on the carriageway in direct conflict with traffic is unacceptable. Enforcing these new restrictions will enhance the safety of our streets for all road users. Double parking and dropped kerb parking also create significant problems in streets throughout the city for both pedestrians and drivers, who encounter blocked roads and struggle to maneuver safely.
