GMP cop accused of assaulting toddler and her dad denies allegations and says actions during incident were 'lawful'
A GMP cop accused of assaulting a toddler and her dad has denied the allegations in court. Police Constable Paul Cleasby is alleged to have hurt the child by forcibly pushing open the front door of her home, which, a court heard, she was standing behind.
The man said he was not invited in and the officer told him he did not need an invitation and the man started shouting, the court heard. Asked for his assessment of his reaction the officer answered: "It was very aggressive." The man started shouting that the door had hit his daughter, the court heard. "I didn’t see it happen. I don’t believe I hit his daughter," the defendant told the court.
The officer said: "I took hold of his wrist to control his wrist to prevent him from hitting out and try to control the situation." PC Cleasby said that he was arresting the man for breach of the peace and his behaviour was 'becoming worse and worse'. He added: "He was stronger than the average person. I had to apply more force to keep hold of his wrist."
The toddler could be heard crying and her mum was shouting at the officers that he had not done anything, the court was told. The defendant told the court that he had earlier released the flap on his Taser but did not take it out of its holster. The court heard that events moved to the kitchen and during attempts to handcuff the man, PC Cleasby punched him in the face, as did one of his colleagues. He agreed that he had been told by the GMP that in certain circumstances with a non-compliant person they could be punched in the face.
