The chair of Greater Manchester Police Federation has shared a powerful personal story as he paid tribute to striking paramedics. Lee Broadbent described the moment seven years ago when paramedics rushed to his grandmother's aid after a fall.
Tweeting today, the GMP Constable wrote: "On the 1st December 7yrs ago I received the worst call of my life, although I didn’t know it at the time… At around 0930 that morning my grandad called to say my grandma had fallen and he couldn’t get her up."I put down my breakfast and ran over. I lived about 5 minutes walk away so with a brisk run I arrived fairly quickly. I used my key to let myself in and heard my grandad shouting from upstairs as I entered.
"I performed CPR for what felt like an eternity. In fact it was less than 5 minutes before an ambulance crew, shortly followed by a paramedic came to our assistance…"I’ll not go into detail of that morning, safe to say I’ve seen and been present at things which have had a truly deep emotional impact on me… but nothing can prepare you for doing CPR on a loved one… well.. you don’t forget
He questioned, if faced with the same situation today as he faced seven years ago, whether he could expect the same service. "Could I expect the same service 2, 3 or even 6 years ago?" he pondered. "I can speak intimately about a profession, who unable to strike, have seen their pay cut by 13% over the last decade . Whose terms and conditions of service have been shredded and whose pensions have been…stolen…
"We fell foul to the belief that our inability to strike and ‘elevated’ position in public function would see us treated fairly, if not better… now, our numbers depleted, our T&Cs ripped up our good will exhausted and our ‘elevated’ position trampled upon…
