GMP statement as officers remain under investigation over airport incident

The police watchdog has been investigating the violent scenes which unfolded on July 23

Greater Manchester Police have issued a new statement on the Manchester Airport incident, as officers involved remain under criminal investigation.

Protests broke out in Manchester and Rochdale after the first video showing violent scenes at Manchester Airport circulated online after July 23. It showed an officer appearing to kick and stamp on the head of Fahir Amaaz, 19, while he was on the ground. It comes after a new complaint against Greater Manchester Police was also referred to the police watchdog on Tuesday , detailing several allegations, from one of the people involved.

"This is a complex case so we ask for public support in bearing with us while we make sure that enquiries are completed thoroughly, We also remain fully committed to supporting the IOPC led investigation into our officers actions. "The incident, which resulted in injuries to police officers and members of the public, has caused understandable concern and we are working hard to piece together all of the relevant events on that day. In parallel, GMP is investigating whether any criminal offences were committed by members of the public during the initial altercation and the subsequent arrests.
