Neophyte Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go has reiterated his commitment to address the concerns of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Go stressed this as he led the groundbreaking ceremony of the country’s first overseas Filipino workers Hospital in San Fernando City, Pampanga, last Tuesday.

It is painful to see our countrymen leaving his family and love ones behind just to work in far places. Let us repay their sacrifices with good services for them and their families,” he said When enacted into law, the following agencies and their powers and functions, funds and appropriations, records, equipment, property, and personnel will be transferred to the new department to be established: Overseas Workers Welfare Administration ; Philippine Overseas Employment Administration ; Commission on Filipinos Overseas ; International Labor Affairs Bureau of the Department of Labor and Employment ; and National Reintegration Center for OFWs .

It will also provide for the creation of the Overseas Filipinos Assistance Fund for migrant workers in distress, inclusive of repatriation and provisions for life savings funds in times of emergencies. Go also said during the ceremony about the institutionalization of Malasakit Centers all over the country as one of his advocacies to ensure that overseas Filipinos and their families at home are provided with swift access to government medical and financial services.

“For OFW returnees, integration programs were introduced. For one, the Department of Agriculture, together with the Department of Labor and Employment, created a program where OFWs may apply for loans to boost food production services,” Go said.
