Gogglebox favourite Mary Killen revealed that she will never drink alcohol again after suffering from a difficult bout of campylobacter food poisoning six years ago
Mary Killen from Gogglebox has opened up about her serious health scare that led to a life without alcohol. Known for her hilarious squabbles with husband Giles on the show, she had to stop drinking after a severe case of campylobacter food poisoning six years ago, which she suspects was due to "grubby" vegetables from her own garden.
While undergoing treatment and requiring antibiotics, Mary discovered a distaste for alcohol. She told the Daily Mail: "Immediately afterward, I found I couldn't face alcohol. I remember going to a house party on the Isle of Mull a short time later. All sorts of wonderful wines were being served and I couldn't touch any of them." Even the smell became unpleasant for her.
Campylobacteriosis, her diagnosis, is an infection caused by bacteria in contaminated food and water, leading to symptoms like diarrhoea, cramps, and fever. Mary and Giles have been a staple on Gogglebox since their debut in the fifth series back in 2015, brought onto the programme by a friend in production, reports Leeds Live. And although they seem to be a very tight knit couple, the pair previously confessed that it hasn’t always been that way, but that they have the Channel 4 show to thank for changing that.
Talking to the Daily Mail, the couple said that the show ‘saved their marriage.’ Giles explained: “Working together on Gogglebox – watching telly at the same time – meant Mary and I suddenly no longer lived like two intimate strangers, Mary working from 6am till 8pm, then falling asleep slightly drunk at 9pm; me gardening from 1pm till 3.30pm, when I have lunch, and then going to bed at two in the morning after watching vintage horror films. It has definitely saved our marriage.
