We don’t own the world and the world does not owe us
People carrying a banner reading “Stop mass tourism” during a protest in Alicante This column is about the world’s truly privileged people: tourists, who pack holiday gear and go off somewhere nice to decompress, throw all their worries into the wind. Most humans are too time and cash poor for such indulgences. Some save enough to travel to their home villages, towns and cities for festivals or to see families. The rest live and die in their birthplaces.
Tunisia, relatively free and open, is, becoming stridently undemocratic and oppressive, warns Human Rights Watch. Most Arab lands have gone that way since the Arab Spring. Many also have Islamist militants who hate the West. So no more Egypt, or Morocco for us. Iran and Saudi Arabia remain horribly misogynist and dictatorial; Dubai and other locations in the Emirates, to me, are places I now have no desire to go. .
We know a minority can spoil it for the many, but the dissatisfaction today goes way beyond that. It is about the sheer numbers and the lack of any obvious economic benefits for most inhabitants in host countries. Some of the most touristy places have people living in poverty. But always honour the contract between the receiving nation and us, outsiders dropping in. Be thoughtful, unobtrusive, learn some of the language, talk to people, use local drivers, eateries and guides, pay them properly.
These people are relentlessly dehumanised by Nigel Farage, Suella Braverman, Priti Patel, Rishi Sunak and others. Survivors are hated for surviving.in the past year. Two babies and a 15-year-old Iraqi boy were among them. Others died of illness, old age or suicide. The Home Office shares only basic data. The chief inspector of prisons has also issued an urgent warning about unsafe immigration removal centres.
