A 37-year-old Victorian gold miner has died after he and another worker were pinned underneath fallen rocks 500 metres underground. Police on Thursday said the other miner, a 21-year-old, was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition and treated for lower body injuries after the pair were trapped in a collapsed Ballarat mine on Wednesday. Australian Workers Union Victoria state secretary Ronnie Hayden said the pair had been undertaking a manual type of mining called air legging.
“They were, it appears, under unsupported ground and it has collapsed,” he said. The mine’s owner Victory Minerals said its emergency response team was working closely with Victoria Police and other authorities. “Right now our priority is the safety and well-being of our mining workers and their families,” it said in a statement. Ballarat Mayor Des Hudson said it was devastating news to hear of the miner’s death. “We are a very resilient community,” he said. “There will be great community concern and support by the local community to those that are involved
