Brady Corbet , director of The Brutalist , paid tribute to actress Aubrey Plaza and her late husband, Jeff Baena , during his Golden Globes acceptance speech for Best Director. Corbet, 36, acknowledged Plaza and Baena's family in his closing remarks, prompting an emotional response from actor Adrien Brody, who starred in the film. Baena, 47, died by suicide recently.
Corbet also honored other individuals who had passed away while he was making the film, including producer Kevin Turen and two of his grandfathers. The Brutalist revolves around the aftermath of World War II and won against other strong contenders for Best Director, including films directed by Jacques Audiard, Sean Baker, Edward Berger, Coralie Fargeat, and Payal Kapadia.
