Does having a Glaswegian accent lead to some awkward encounters?👀
A debate was sparked on Good Morning Britain over broad Scottish accents and having to tone them down.
Presenters of the ITV show Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley sat down with guests Apprentice star Joanna Jarjue and Blethered podcast host Sean McDonald to discuss how people often perceive their strong Glaswegian and Yorkshire accents. The guests said that their accent has led to assumptions about them and even requests for them to speak differently, the Daily Record reports.
Joanna Jarjue argued it's more about pronunciation than your accent, saying: "Down here people think I'm the most northern thing going and then when I go back up north, it's almost as if I've turned into a Londoner."The 67-year-old admitted he does in fact have an Essex accent but was forced to tone it down by his very strict father.
He explained: “I upgraded mine because my dad was a public school educated guy and at home in Romford, if I spoke like I spoke in the playground - honestly this is how I spoke- Dad would give me a clip around the ear and say don’t drop your h’s.The discussion comes following Sir Keir Starmer's push for use of the correct grammar sparked a debate that it will lead to students being unfairly judged on their accents.
