The remainder of the Gulf is subject to shared usage and management among the US, Mexico, and Cuba.For users in the United States accessing Google Maps, the Gulf of Mexico now appears as the Gulf of America. Conversely, users in other regions, such as the United Kingdom, encounter a dual labeling, displaying both 'Gulf of Mexico' and 'Gulf of America.' Users in Mexico, however, continue to see the familiar designation, 'Gulf of Mexico.' This renaming initiative, one of Trump's early executive orders, was further solidified on February 9th with a second proclamation establishing the inaugural 'Gulf of America Day' while the president was airborne over the region. Google confirmed the update, stating, 'In the US, the Geographic Names Information System has officially updated 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America.' As we announced two weeks ago and consistent with our longstanding practices, we've begun rolling out changes to reflect this update.' Trump enthusiastically celebrated the change on his social media platform, Truth Social, posting an image of the Gulf of America with the caption, 'GULF OF AMERICA!' Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum countered, emphasizing the legal limitations of the US claim, stating, 'If a country wants to change the designation of something in the sea, it would only apply up to 12 nautical miles,' adding, 'It cannot apply to the rest, in this case, the Gulf of Mexico.'
