Google Podcasts is going away. Users in the U.S. will be unable to stream podcasts using the app from April 2, while podcasts fans elsewhere will suffer the same fate later in the year., it’s one of my go-to apps for workouts. It’s a cleaner podcast app than some of the competition too, such as Podcast Addict.Google announced the Podcasts retirement plan in September 2023.

The move brings Google’s music strategy a little closer to Spotify’s. It went big on podcasts in 2019, and famously spent $100 million making The Joe Rogan Experience podcast a Spotify exclusive in 2020. More bad news: a shift to YouTube Music gives Google many more opportunities to do what it likes to do on YouTube, nudging you into trying a paid subscription. The move to bring podcasts and music together also represents a return of sorts for Google. Before Google Podcasts launched in 2018, you could use YouTube Music predecessor Google Play Music to listen to podcasts .
