Former Senator Richard Gordon on Thursday, March 23, thanked and congratulated the Office of the Ombudsman for coming out with a ruling suspending 33 government officials. ManilaBulletin
Gordon, who was then chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee that investigated the alleged overpriced procurement of Covid-19 supplies during the pandemic, said the ruling is “a fitting culmination to the Blue Ribbon Committee’s colossal efforts in exposing the anomalous purchases of overpriced masks, personal protective equipment , and other vital supplies perpetrated by villainous persons at the height of the pandemic.
“The Blue Ribbon Committee held over eighteen hearings. In those proceedings, we heard and addressed pleas of health care workers, and gave them a voice,” Gordon said in a statement on Facebook. Gordon also appreciated the fact that the Ombudsman’s order was released despite the fact that the Senate panel’s Committee Report was not approved during the 18th Congress.
The Philippine Red Cross chairman further said that the heinousness of the crimes committed was aggravated by the fact that greed prevailed at a time when the country’s health care workers, “and the rest of our people were most vulnerable to Covid-19; many were sick, and thousands were dying.”
