Governor Cox said Utah made a “huge mistake” in a portion of criminal justice reform by not adequately preparing inmates for the outside world before they are released from prison.
That statement was in response to a 2News question over the state’s Justice Reinvestment Initiative, or JRI, a reform that has operated for nearly a decade. 17-year-old Yahir Duenas-Gomez was killed as a result of severe injuries in a car crash several years ago, a crash in which a parolee was accused of driving more than 90 mph when he hit Duenas-Gomez and ran away.
Fernando Lopez, uncle of Duenas-Gomez, called it “very chilling” to hear the governor’s comments on criminal justice reform shortcomings.
