Business has urged the Albanese government to stop ignoring warnings from the Productivity Commission and Reserve Bank of Australia about Labor’s counterproductive workplace changes, and instead prioritise the recommendation to simplify the industry award pay system.said improving workplace productivity and the fair sharing of gains could be achieved by amending the Fair Work Act to “ensure that modern awards are easy to understand” and considering the effect on “efficiency” and “productivity”.
Council of Small Business Organisations Australia chairman Matthew Addison said the commission’s call to simplify pay awards should be given at least as much priority as the government’s planned changes. “The Productivity Commission saying lets simplify awards, we are absolutely in agreement with. It should be on the government’s priority list as we want to see it brought to reality.”
