The new ID scheme could be introduced as early as 2029

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the scheme could be introduced as early as 2029 . Designed to make it easier for people across the UK to use "vital government services", the programme will be used for a number of reasons - such as for renters to prove their identity to landlords, parents applying for free childcare, and right to work checks.

It will be free and stored on your phone, with details such as age and residency status included. The government has assured that police will not be able to demand to see an individual's ID.

'Protect the Right to Live Without a Digital ID', and it called for 'legal safeguard' in all digital ID laws which guarantee that everyone will have equal opportunities with no exclusion or pressure.that the Digital ID system they are planning to introduce will be 'voluntary', and 'free to access' for those who choose to utilise it. The Cabinet Office also said that they have launched a 'comprehensive consultation' about the design of the new system to make it 'secure' and 'convenient'.

Now, the Government has issued an update regarding the gradual implementation of the digital ID system. A new independent advisory group of experts will provide accountability and insight on how the Government’s digital ID system can be inclusive, useful and trusted, the Government said in an update.

It added that a separate programme of engagement with the digital verification services and financial services sectors will be launched later in the month to ensure their insights inform the Digital ID programme as it develops. An advisory group has been brought together by Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, Darren Jones, to support the delivery of digital ID and provide independent scrutiny and oversight as it is developed.

The members announced today are: John Fallon, Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE, David Rogers MBE, Emma Wright, Justine Roberts CBE, and The Hon. Victor Dominello. This group is set to four times a year for the duration of the Digital ID programme to provide external scrutiny and strategic insight and will challenge the Government on emerging ideas or policy decisions to ensure the system works for everyone.

On top of that, the Government said it will this month kick off a process of regular engagement with the Digital Verification Services and Financial Services sectors, to ensure lessons and insights from these sectors can inform the Digital ID programme as it develops. Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, Darren Jones said: "The current legacy system of call centres, paperwork and the need to tell your story multiple times to different parts of government is not good enough.

"In its place, we need to build a truly modern UK where public services work for you, with digital ID as the foundation. "This new programme of engagement will ensure we benefit from the expertise and experience of experts as we build a system that is secure, useful and for everyone – and that supports public services that are there for you when you need them most.

" Julian David OBE, CEO of techUK said: "To support a thriving Digital ID ecosystem, it is essential that the expertise and insight from the private sector is at the heart of the Digital ID programme. We welcome the Government’s commitment to regular structured engagement with the UK’s thriving DVS sector through the establishment of a technical working group.
