The 2015 assessment found that the Provisional Army Council continues to oversee both the Provisional IRA and Sinn Féin

The UK Government have refused to say whether they have any plans for an updated assessment into the structure, role and purpose of paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland.

That assessment found that Provisional IRA members believed that the so-called 'Army Council' continues to oversee the Provisional IRA and Sinn Féin with an overarching 'wholly political' strategy and that a small number are involved in the storage of remaining weaponry in order to prevent it's loss to dissident republicans.

Among the other findings of the report were that "individual members and some senior figures within many UDA areas are involved in organised crime including drug dealing, robbery, extortion, and the distribution of counterfeit and contraband goods.

"The PSNI and security partners continue to work to keep the people of Northern Ireland safe, including monitoring the continuing threat from paramilitary and terrorist groups to inform their operational response."
