The UK government has decided against providing financial compensation to Waspi women, who experienced a delay in receiving their state pensions due to changes in the state pension age.

Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall announced on Tuesday that her department did not accept the need for compensation for Waspi women, arguing it would not be a “fair and proportionate use of taxpayers’ money”. All 1950s-born women who expected to get their state pension at 60 but had to wait another five or six years.

A damning report by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) in March found the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) maladministered the changes to the state pension age. Ms Kendall said the DWP did accept that there had been maladministration – but rejected the need to provide any money to Waspi women. The cabinet minister said the Government had decided that “there should be no scheme of financial compensation to 1950s-born women in response to the ombudsman’s report.”She said the DWP had concluded that “most women knew the state pension age was increasing” and that delays of 28 months in getting letters out to women to inform them “aren’t as significant as the ombudsman says”. Ms Kendall added: “Given the vast majority of women knew the state pension age was increasing, the Government does not believe paying a flat rate to all women at a cost of up to £10.5 billion would be fair or proportionate to taxpayers.” The Work and Pensions Secretary apologised for her department’s delays in the delays getting letters out to 1950s born women, and said the DWP would “learn all the lessons to ensure this type of maladministration never happens again”. Ms Kendall said the rejection of a compensation scheme was an “extremely difficult decision to take”, and promised Waspi women that Labour will protect the pensions triple lock promise which ensures rising payments. An estimated 3.6 million Waspi women expected to get their state pension at 60 but had to wait until they were 65 or 66 due to major increases in the state pension age
