A petition on the issue has been signed by more 34,500 people
The Government has responded to calls for the BBC TV Licence to be made free for all state pension ers, after more than 34,000 people backed the demand. A petition on a Parliamentary website urged the Labour Party government to "fund free TV licences for existing pensioners and those who reach the official retirement age."
"We feel it is a double outrage that those who have given their all to this country in taxes and raising children have to pay a TV licence fee and are only exempt if they receive means-tested Pension Credit. Meanwhile, some media figures draw huge salaries." They added that while they strongly believe in public funding for the BBC, they recognise the financial challenges some households face and are committed to helping them manage the cost of the TV licence, reports Birmingham Live. In an effort to support households facing financial hardships, the Government has expanded the Simple Payment Plan .

While exploring alternative funding models, Ms. Nandy emphasized that general taxation is not an option to avoid political interference with the BBC. The government will review the BBC's Royal Charter, including a public consultation, to determine the broadcaster's future funding.
