The government has urged employers to 'respond sensitively'

The government has urged employers to "respond sensitively" to staff who wish to take time off for the Queen's state funeral.

The date of the ceremony, which will take place at Westminster Abbey at 11am on September 19, was declared a bank holiday by King Charles during his proclamation yesterday. This is to allow mourners to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II and commemorate her seven-decade reign. The September 19 bank holiday, which the government has confirmed will take place across the United Kingdom, will also mark the final day of the national mourning period. While there is no statutory entitlement for time off, employers are urged to "respond sensitively" if staff wish to not work that day.On the government website it states: "Monday, September 19, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral, will be a national bank holiday.

"Employers may include bank holidays as part of a worker’s leave entitlement. The bank holiday will be a unique national moment, and we would encourage employers to respond sensitively to requests from workers who wish to take time off." The government cannot interfere in existing contractual arrangements between employers and workers. Requests for time off or extra pay if staff work on the day are a matter of discussion between employees and their employer.
