The UK government has published its National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), outlining plans to construct 1.5 million new homes by the end of the current parliamentary term. The 82-page document proposes overhauling planning rules and setting mandatory housebuilding targets for local councils, aiming to achieve an average of 370,000 new homes per year. This target represents a significant increase from recent years and signifies a return to stricter housebuilding targets.
The Government has published its 82-page version of the National Planning Policy Framework which outlines how it hopes to meet it’s 1.5m new homes target. by the end of this Parliament have been met with the same question ever since they were first trailed in the run-up to the general election – can the UK really deliver such a huge housebuilding programme?
Many of the measures announced in the new NPPF were in Labour’s pitch for government during the election campaign which those who were paying attention , targets have risen by around 20 per cent. The biggest jumps are in the North East and North West. The announcements are solid. They show that political will is 100 per cent behind a major housebuilding programme.
Labour are aware of both of these issues and they knew that they would face an uphill battle to end the housing crisis if they won the election. Their masterplan is a good one, but the Government will need to find money and train a new generation of construction workers fast if they want it to work.
But, if you’re a first-time buyer or you’re someone looking to upsize, it just means housing is getting more expensive.warned only the richest 10 per cent of households in England can afford to buy a home after saving five years or less of their disposable income.
