The message sent by successive Governments is clear: university is the priority and everyone should aim for the gold medal. Anas Sarwar was deputy to Johann Lamont over a decade ago when she made her infamous ‘something for nothing’ speech. Her argument, which was widely attacked at the time, was that middle class Scots receive benefits while paying no extra cash.
