The UK government is taking steps to address the issue of loud music on public transport, particularly on buses. Passengers have long complained about inconsiderate individuals playing music without headphones, disrupting the experience of others. In response to calls for action, the Department for Transport announced new pilot schemes deploying Transport Safety Officers to tackle anti-social behaviour (ASB) on public transport. These pilots aim to identify effective strategies for addressing the issue and share best practices with other local authorities.

The government has given an update on calls to ban ‘loud music’ on public transport including buses. Passengers are driven mad by people playing whatever they’re in the mood for without headphones and taking no notice of the fact that not everyone shares their taste in music.

Parliamentary Under-Secretary Simon Lightwood replied and revealed that new pilot schemes were being funded to put Transport Safety Officers out and about to tackle the issue. He said: “The government is committed to tackling all forms of anti-social behaviour on public transport. “The Bus Services Bill aims to provide all local transport authorities with the powers to effectively enforce against ASB on their bus networks and improve safety for passengers. The Bill also seeks to mandate that staff are trained on how to recognise and respond to incidents of ASB on buses.”
