It follows a four-month investigation by i which found courts were processing hundreds of warrants allowing firms to force-fit prepayment meters in just minutes.
Investigations CorrespondentCampaigners and MPs who have been fighting to stop the UK’s poorest families from being forced onto energy prepayment this winter have welcomed the Government’s call for firms to stop force installing them – but insist stronger action is needed.
Ed Miliband, Labour’s shadow energy and climate secretary, said: “I am deeply concerned that vague words from government will not be enough to stop disconnection by the back door.” MPs who have been raising the issue in Parliament have also called for stronger action after asking more than 30 written and verbal questions since the start of December including at Prime Minister’s Questions.
