GP on £200,000 a year is struck off after stealing £1.1m of taxpayers' money from NHS
Rumi Chhapia, 45, entered 'desperation phase' of online gambling addiction. Court heard GP stole £1.13 million from surgery group claiming he was 'hacked'. But money was found to be sent to his account in 65 transfers over 41 days.
The father-of-one was jailed for over three years at Portsmouth Crown Court. He has now been struck off the GP register after a Medical Practitioners Tribunal. Of £1.13 million he embezzled, Chhapia paid back £238,000 and gambling companies will pay £904,000 in 'very unusual' arrangement
