The first Old Firm showdown of the season could prove to be a pivotal point in the campaign

Graeme Souness would’ve loved to get on the ball and be baited by 60,000 Celtic fans packed into an entirely partisan Parkhead.

“The bigger the challenge, bring it on. The Rangers players now have to have that mentality. If you’re going to go there and play and be at your best, you have to believe: It’s going to be all about me today. If seven or eight of them think that, then you’ve got a great chance, not a good chance.” “And I’m sure the players that were with him last year will be richer for the experience. So, other than the new players, they’re going to Parkhead knowing what’s coming their way. I know if you go back over a decade you’d say there has to be an enormous gap. I don’t see it like that now. I saw two Old Firm games last year. The 2-1 game at Parkhead when Rangers went down to 10 men.

Souness said: “There’s a disparity in what Rangers’ financial situation is now and Celtic’s. They’ve been qualifying for the Champions League on a regular basis, getting that money. They’ve had some luck in the transfer market - even this week, getting the best part of £25m. Will Celtic spend any of that between now and the weekend? We’ll have to wait and see.

“I went in there to a team that was going backwards and I had to buy players where you end up chasing. So, yeah, they have more money than us right now. But the names on the team sheet and what the values are and what they’ve paid for these players doesn’t really mean too much on match day.”
